Blackford's Beauty

 Assembly

Step 4

Referring to the partial quilt assembly diagram, join 4 blocks alternately with 3 end sash units for the top block row. Make another row like this for the bottom block row. Join 4 blocks alternately with 3 center sash units for block rows 2, 3, and 4.

Step 5

Join 2 center sash units alternately with 3 D's. Add an end sash unit to each end as shown for a sash row. Make 4.

Step 6

Again referring to the diagram, sew the top block row to a sash row. Add block rows 2, 3, and 4 alternately with sash rows. Sew the bottom block row on last, referring to the quilt photograph for the correct orientation.

Step 7

Sew the border strips together in this order, matching the centers: a short blue print border, a short purple print border, a short blue floral border. Make 2 strip sets like this. Likewise, make 2 sets of long border strips. Sew the long borders to the sides of the quilt and the short borders to the top and bottom, matching centers. Miter the corners.

Step 8

Layer the quilt lining, batting, and top. Baste. Quilt in-the-ditch around the block patches and along the sashes. Quilt a grid across the borders and sashes, or as desired. Bind the quilt to finish.
