Florentine Dance

Florence, Italy, is where Annamaria Brenti grew up, and she remembers going to the Villa Belvedere Hotel with her grandparents to enjoy the view she has recreated in this 76" x 78" quilt. A group of dancing women, their dresses made from the same transparent silk as the sky, was inspired by figures in the famous fresco Allegory of Good Government painted by Ambrogio Lorenzetti in 1337. The trapunto patterns in the shaded velvet frame are from the marble floor of the Duomo, seen in the distance. "I like to use many different kinds of fabrics, such as silks, commercial cottons, and my own hand-dyes, to add light and texture," Annamaria says. "I started quilting in 1986, and I still remember sitting on the steps of the library at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, reading my first issue of QNM.
