Paper-Pieced Sue and Bill

These delightful Sue and Bill blocks, designed by Mary Leman Austin and originally published by Quilts & Other Comforts, are unique because the figures are pieced rather than appliqued. The paper-foundation patterns provided here will make 4" blocks. If you want larger blocks, enlarge 200% for an 8" block, or 300% for a 12".

You can make your quilt with all Sues, all Bills, or mix them up. Make many different Sue and Bill blocks for a scrap quilt. Or coordinate their outfits and repeat the background fabric for a more controlled look.

Gather enough fabrics to make a block. Photocopy or trace the paper-foundation pattern. Each block is made in sections that are indicated by the bold lines. Cut the pattern sections apart.

Use paper-foundation piecing methods to stitch fabric patches to each section in numerical order. Trim around the sections, leaving a 1/4"seam allowance, and join them to complete the block.

Caution! Due to variations in equipment and settings, we cannot guarantee templates will print out at the intended size. Please check printed templates against the measurements given and, if necessary, enlarge or reduce to the appropriate size.
