Geese in the Cabin

 Assembly

Step 1

Wash and press fabrics. Cut borders listed in the materials and cutting box. Cut patches and strips for paper-foundation piecing. We suggest rough-cutting half-square triangles for the "geese" from 2 1/2" squares of fabric.

Step 2

Enlarge the paper foundation 200 percent on a photocopy machine. Trace or photocopy the pattern 72 times for paper piecing.

Step 3

Referring to the diagram, make 72 blocks.

Step 4

Referring to the partial quilt assembly diagram and the quilt photograph, arrange the blocks in 9 rows of 8 blocks each, rotating blocks to form the overall design.

Step 5

Sew the longer purple borders to the sides of the quilt and trim excess length. Sew the shorter purple borders to the top and bottom; trim. There is a good tip for sewing 1/4" borders like this in Slick Tricks, QNM issue 366.

Step 6

Sew the shorter red borders to the sides of the quilt and trim excess length. Sew the longer red borders to the top and bottom; trim.

Step 7

Se Layer the quilt lining, batting, and top. Baste. Joyce quilted curving floral patterns diagonally across the quilt to contrast with the geometric patchwork. Quilt in-the-ditch around the block patches if you prefer. Bind the quilt to finish.
