 Assembly

Step 1

Wash and press fabrics. Cut the borders, strips, and patches listed in the materials and cutting box.

Step 2

The blocks are made with strip piecing. Referring to the band diagrams, join the appropriate strips into bands 1, 2, 3, and 4. Press the seam allowances as indicated by the arrows in the diagrams. Make the number of bands indicated.

Cut segments that are 1 1/2" wide from each band. Cut the number of segments indicated.

Step 3

Referring to the block piecing diagram, sew a segment from band 2 between 2 segments from band 1. Sew a segment 3 to the side, and sew a segment 4 to the bottom. Make 70 blocks.

Step 4

Referring to the partial quilt assembly diagram, join blocks in diagonal rows with B patches at the ends of rows. Join the rows. Sew a C to each corner.

Step 5

Sew a medium green border to the top and one to the bottom of the quilt.

Step 6

Red strips for flaps are cut crosswise and pieced. When joining 2 strips, place the ends at right angles and sew a diagonal seam. Press seam allowance open to reduce bulk. Cut to 42 1/8". Fold in half, wrong sides together, and press to make a flap. Align the raw edges of the flap with the raw edge of the top medium green border. Baste close to raw edges (Fig. 1). Repeat for the bottom.

Likewise, piece and fold the long red strips in half and press. Align the long red flap with the quilt's side, raw edges even. Flaps will overlap in the corners (Fig.2). Baste in place close to the edge. Repeat for the other side.

Step 7

Sew a short dark green border to the top of the quilt, catching the raw edges of the flap in the seam. Press the flap toward the quilt and the outer green border away from the quilt. Repeat for the bottom.

Sew long dark green borders to the sides, and press as before (Fig. 3).

Step 8

Layer the quilt lining, batting, and top. Baste. Quilt in-the-ditch around the block patches. Nancy quilted continuous-line leaves and stems in the A, B, and C patches. The outer border has a 1" grid quilted perpendicular to the edge. Bind the quilt to finish.
