Birds 'N' Roses

Birds 'N' Roses, 83" by 83" by Margaret E. Docherty of Broompark, Durham, United Kingdom, appears on the cover of the April 2005 issue of Quilter's Newsletter Magazine. As a follow-up to her award-winning quilt Little Brown Bird, Margaret decided to create another floral quilt, this time in the format of one of the celebrated American garden quilts of the 1930s. Working on the quilt in two large pieces over four years, she hand appliqued primroses, auriculas, roses, and wild birds, all the things she loves in her garden in England. She added some fine-line inking for details and stuffing behind some of the applique, and finished the quilt with hand quilting and trapunto in some areas. Margaret's quilt won the Robert S. Cohan Master Award for Traditional Artistry at the International Quilt Festival/Houston in 2004, and she hopes to write a book about the quilt in the near future.

Margaret has patterns for another of her prizewinning quilts available in a book and on CD-ROM from the American Quilter's Society. Order Applique Masterpiece: Little Brown Bird Patterns from AQS at 800-626-5420 or visit the website www.americanquilter.com.
