Playing With Photos
Labels
Labels that include a photo of the maker as well as the child the quilt was made for will turn any quilt into a family heirloom. A label can be added to the lining long after the quilt is finished. It can also be an integral part of the design on the quilt's front. Simply replace patches of a pieced block with photos on fabric. Add words with permanent pens or embroidery, or print the information on your computer and place the text on the photo before the image is transferred to fabric. In the label above, the extraneous background was cut away from the people before the copy was made. The words make clear the relationship between quiltmaker and child, with four generations shown.
Wall Quilts
Stars of the Family, by Jan Krentz of San Diego, is an effective way to frame photos for a small wall quilt. To make a 5-pointed star pattern, mark 5 dots on the sides of paper that is 6" to 8" square, referring to Jan's quilt for placement. Connect the dots with lines to form a star. Cut the star apart to use as templates. Repeat to make various star shapes. Keep some parts of a star intact for larger photos.
