Bawltimoo's Field of Dreams

Traditional Baltimore album blocks such as the ones shown in Elly Sienkiewicz's book Papercuts and Plenty: Studies in Classic Album Quilt Applique (Watson-Guptill Publications, 1995) inspired Susan Duffield of Sidney, British Columbia, Canada, to make the quilt she fondly refers to as "The Girls." The subject makes us smile, but it's the precision stitching that elicits serious words of admiration. Susan used silk thread and a tiny zigzag stitch to machine applique all of the cows on this 64" x 64" piece. "The field has the flowers I remember from my childhood," she says. "I know the colors aren't true, but they are as my memory dictates. " Clockwise from the top, the papercut-style blocks are entitled Celtic Cows, Maids A-Milking, Swinging Bovines, Moooo, Great Escape, and Over the Moon. Photo by Mellisa Karlin Mahoney.
