Blue Indigo

 Assembly

Step 1

Wash and press fabrics. For more control, try starching the wrong side of your fabrics before you cut. Each block uses three fabrics: one blue print for the B patches, a second blue print for the blue A patches, and a white print for the white A patches. The white and blue A's and blue B's can be cut from scraps or as strips from bigger pieces of fabric. Cut the patches listed in the materials and cutting box. Cut the borders from the length of the green print before cutting the C's, D's, and E's.

Step 2

Referring to the nine-patch unit diagram, make 5 units alike for one block. The units can be strip pieced from 1 1/2"-wide strips following the directions in the box on the right, or they can be assembled from individually cut A's. Make a total of 180 units.

Step 3

Referring to the block diagram, make 36 double nine-patch blocks. Each block uses 5 nine-patch units and 4 B's.

Step 4

Referring to the partial quilt assembly diagram and the quilt photograph, join the double nine-patch blocks and C's in diagonal rows, adding D's and E's to the ends of the rows as shown. Press seam allowances toward C's and D's. Stitch the rows together, taking care to match the edges of the blocks as you sew. Trim the edges to square the quilt.

Step 5

Sew the shorter green borders to the top and bottom of the quilt. Sew the longer borders to the sides of the quilt.

Step 6

Sandra had Martha Garvey machine quilt her work with an allover rose pattern. Mark quilting motifs as desired or browse our webextras for a quilting motif for the C's, D's, and E's.

Step 7

Layer the quilt lining, batting, and top. Baste. Quilt in-the-ditch around the block patches and on the marked lines. Bind the quilt to finish.
