Hawaiian Beauty
By Junko Yamada
A visit years ago to the Honolulu Academy of Arts began Junko Yamada's fascination with Hawaiian quilts. Junko, of Nagoyashi, Japan, tells QNM that she made this 77" x 77" quilt to help her remember the beautiful sunsets she saw in Hawaii.
Using fabrics she bought while vacationing, Junko sewed curved patches into rectangles of three different sizes and pieced these blocks into abstract waves to form the background for her applique. While the central hearts, pineapples, and hibiscus were created in the traditional Hawaiian "papercut" fashion, the borders were too large to be made from one piece of cloth. The delicate inner scalloped line was created with reverse applique, and each of the 68 accent dots was stitched to the surface individually. Photo by Mellisa Karlin Mahoney..
