Fine Feathered Flock
Assembly
Step 1
Prewash the yardage, rinsing each fabric separately. Damp dry and press. Cut the patches A-D as listed in the fabric and cutting box.
Step 2
Trace the paper-foundation pattern onto paper, separating the units (marked with heavier lines), and adding 1/4" seam allowances around each unit. Make 15 photocopies of the paper-foundation patterns. Hint: For best use of fabric, cut a strip 1 5/8" wide from each chicken fabric and the white background, for piecing the small triangle patches.
Sew the patches to the foundations and trim the excess fabric. Join the sections in the order shown in the block piecing diagram, leaving the paper in place. Make 14 more blocks.

Step 3
Referring to the partial quilt assembly (below), join sashes (A's) and blocks to make 5 block rows. Join sashes and B's to make 6 sash rows. Join rows. Carefully remove the paper foundations.

Step 4
Sew D patches to make 4 corner units and C patches to make 74 border units. Join 23 border units for each side border, and sew to the quilt. Join 14 border units to make the top border. Sew a corner unit to each end. Sew to the top. Repeat for the bottom border.

Step 5
Mark diagonal quilting lines in the blocks and sashes. Layer the lining, batting, and quilt top; baste. Quilt the marked lines and in-the-ditch around the patches in the border. Finish the quilt with straight-grain binding.
