Union Square

 Assembly

Step 1

Wash and press fabrics. Cut the patches listed in the materials and cutting box and shown in the rotary cutting diagrams. The sashes and inner borders must be cut from the length of fabric if a stripe is used. Georgina chose a cream print for the background patches of her blocks but used a variety of fabrics to make each block different.

Step 2

Referring to the block piecing diagram, make 20 blocks. Press seam allowances toward B's and pin carefully, matching seams, when assembling units.

Step 3

Use this quick-piecing method to make the setting squares. Finger press or mark a diagonal line on the back of a G patch. Align the G with one corner of H. Stitch on the marked line, corner to corner (Fig. 1). Finger press G open; it should match the corner of H (Fig. 2). If so, trim the excess fabric, leaving 1/4" seam allowances. If it does not match, restitch. Repeat for all 4 corners of H. Make 16 setting squares.

Step 4

Join 5 blocks alternately with 4 F's to make a block row. Press seam allowances toward F's. Make block rows.

Step 5

Join 5 F's alternately with 4 setting squares to make a sash row. Press seam allowances toward F's. Make 3 sash rows.
