 Assembly

Step 1

Wash and press fabrics. Cut the patches listed in the materials and cutting box and shown in the rotary cutting diagrams. If you don't have a large scrap collection, see the Bulletin Board in our January/February 2006 (#379) issue for directions on cutting the patches from purchased yardage. We recommend that you cut the large squares for the G's from the length of the cream fabric before cutting the other patches; the cream borders are cut crosswise and pieced.

Step 2

Referring to the block assembly diagram, make 12 blocks, varying the colors as shown in the quilt photo.

Step 3

Referring to the partial quilt assembly diagram, join the blocks with F's and G's in diagonal rows as indicated, making sure to orient the G's correctly. Join the rows. Sew H's to the corners. The G's and H's are slightly oversize; trim the edges of the quilt to straighten, being sure to leave seam allowances.

Step 4

Stitch the short brown print borders to the top and bottom of the quilt.

Step 5

For the side inner borders, begin by stitching together a band of 41 I's side-by-side, varying the placement of colors. Make 2 bands. Stitch a long brown print border to each band; stitch these units to the sides of the quilt as shown. Trim edges as necessary to square quilt.

Step 6

Make a pieced border for the top of the quilt by stitching together 13 I's end-to-end. Sew a J to each end. Repeat for the bottom unit.

Matching centers, stitch short cream border strips to both sides of each pieced border. Join the border unit to the top of the quilt. Repeat to make second border unit and stitch to the bottom of the quilt. Trim even with the sides of the quilt, if needed.

Step 7

Stitch a long cream border strip to a gold border strip. Make 2. Matching centers and ends, sew the borders to the sides of the quilt as shown.

Step 8

Mark straight line quilting designs of your choice within the pieced blocks and curved-line designs in the cream F's, G's, H's, and borders.

Step 9

Layer the quilt backing, batting, and top. Baste. Quilt on marked lines. Bind the quilt to finish.
