Rachel's Star

 Assembly

Step 1

Because this is a wall quilt, you may prefer not to prewash your fabrics, particularly if you use specialty fabrics. Trace or photocopy the paper-foundation patterns the number of times indicated on the diagrams.

Step 2

Make a pattern for the center hexagon (A); cut 1 A from the blue multiprint floral fabric. Stitch a dark gold B to one edge of the A, stopping an inch away from the edge of the A as shown by the dot in the figure at left. Working counterclockwise, sew a medium gold B in place, a dark gold B, and so on, until all 6 B's are sewn on. Finally, complete the first seam.

Step 3

Following paper-foundation piecing methods, make 3 Star Point Units with medium gold patches and 3 with dark gold patches.

Step 4

Likewise, sew strips to the Log Cabin foundations to make 6 Unit Y's and 12 Unit Z's.

Step 5

Make 6 Side Units.

Step 6

Referring to the quilt assembly diagram, sew a medium gold star point to 3 sides of the center. Sew a dark gold star point between 2 Unit Y's, being careful to turn the units as shown. Sew to a side of the center. Repeat for the remaining 2 sides.

Step 7

Sew a Side Unit between 2 Unit Z's. Make 6 Log Cabin sections like this.

Step 8

Matching centers, sew a dark teal border strip to each blue multiprint border strip. Sew borders to the long edge of the Log Cabin sections made in Step 7. Use a rotary cutter and ruler to trim the ends of the border strips even with the angled edges of the Unit Z's as shown here.

Step 9

Sew a pieced section to each side of the quilt, stopping stitches at the sewing line. Join the sections where they meet. Carefully remove the paper foundations with tweezers.

Step 10

Layer the quilt lining, batting, and top. Baste. Quilt in-the ditch in the patches in Units Y and Z and the Side Units. Quilt the Star of David 3/8" from the seams, following the medium gold and dark gold patches as shown in the quilt photograph. Bind the quilt to finish.
