Civil War Dishes

 Assembly

Step 1

Wash and press fabrics. Cut the patches listed in the materials and cutting box and shown in the rotary cutting diagrams.

Step 2

When choosing fabric for the blocks, note that the value placement of the light and dark scraps is consistent.

Referring to the block piecing diagram, join the A, B, C, D, and E patches to make a block. Make 30.

Step 3

Join 5 blocks alternately with 4 F patches to make a block row as shown in the partial quilt assembly diagram. Make 6 block rows.

Step 4

Sew together 5 F patches alternately with 4 D patches to make a sash row. Make 5 sash rows.

Starting with a block row and alternating types, join the block and sash rows.

Step 5

Referring to the quilt photo and the partial quilt assembly diagram, sew 35 D's together to make a pieced side border. Make 2. Matching centers and ends, sew a pieced side border to each side of the quilt.

Sew together 31 D's to make a pieced top border. Make a pieced bottom border like this. Sew these borders to the top and bottom of the quilt.

Step 6

Match centers and ends and sew a long blue border to the left side of the quilt. Likewise, add a long red border to the right side.

Referring to the partial quilt assembly, sew a red and a blue G patch together to make a border corner square. Make 2. Orienting each to give the appearance of a mitered border, sew corner squares to the left end of the top red border strip and the right end of the bottom blue border strip. Add a blue H and a red H to the opposite ends of the top and bottom border strips. Sew these borders to the quilt.

Step 7

Mark a 3"-wide cable motif of your choosing in the outer borders. Layer the quilt backing, batting, and top. Baste. Quilt the patches in-the-ditch. Quilt diagonally through the block centers, extending the quilting into the pieced border. Quilt the marked cable.

Step 8

Connie added the binding to contrast with the border colors. Referring to the quilt photo, add the red and blue binding strips to the quilt and butt or miter the corners as desired.
