Cultivating Flowers in Wintertime

 General Directions

The five heart wreaths given here are adapted from those in Letha's quilt. Follow her lead and rearrange and alter the various motifs as you wish. Some of the embellishments can be done with embroidery. The butterflies in Letha's quilt are from prints that are cut and stitched as broderie perse.

To make a full-size pattern, fold 12" tracing paper in half lengthwise. Align the dotted line of the motif with the fold, and trace the design. Turn the paper over and trace the other half. Adjust lines as needed where they meet in the center. Each design will fit a 12" or larger background block.

Choose your favorite method of applique. For traditional applique, add a scant 3/16" turn-under allowance around each patch. Follow manufacturer's directions for fusible webbing if you are fusing the patches.

Lines that can be embroidered are shown in gray. You can also use the lines to make separate fabric patches for the large flowers. If a patch does not show up on the background as much as you want, embroider a line around it in a contrasting thread, as Letha did. Embroider the little multi-segmented sprigs, using an outline stitch for the stems and lazy daisy stitches for the sprigs.
