Scrappy Scotties

 Assembly

Step 1

These directions are for fusible applique. Wash and press fabrics. Cut borders and other patches listed in the materials box.

Step 2

Feel free to make more sitting dogs if you prefer, or make all 16 dogs alike. Enlarge the dog patterns 200 percent on a photocopy machine. Trace each dog on acrylic template material. Note that the pattern is given in reverse for fusible applique. Cut the templates apart carefully on the drawn lines.

Mark around each template on the paper side of fusible webbing the number of times needed to make the 16 dogs, leaving space between patches. Cut out the shapes beyond the drawn lines.

Step 3

Following manufacturer's directions for fusible webbing, press each web patch to the wrong side of the appropriate fabric. Cut fabric on the drawn lines. Remove the paper backing and position the fabric patches on each background A, referring to the block diagrams for color placement (light dogs on dark A's and dark dogs on light A's). Use the enlarged photocopy to help with positioning. Press the patches to the background. Stitch edges as desired.

Step 4

Sew a black or white striped B to the bottom of each A. Sew C's to the blocks and then D's, noting placement differences and colors used on the Y and Z blocks. u Join the blocks in 4 rows of 4 blocks each, alternating types as shown in the quilt photograph. Join the rows.

Step 5

Join the blocks in 4 rows of 4 blocks each, alternating types as shown in the quilt photograph. Join the rows.

Step 6

For mitered borders, sew a red border strip to each black border strip, matching centers. Sew a border unit to each edge of the quilt, starting and stopping stitching G" from the quilt's edge. Miter the corners and trim the excess. For butted borders, sew red borders to the top and bottom and trim the excess length. Sew red borders to the sides and trim. Repeat to add the striped borders.

Step 7

Layer the quilt backing, batting, and top. Baste. Quilt in-the-ditch around the applique and along the seams of the blocks and borders. Bind the quilt to finish.
