Barn Loft

 Assembly

Step 1

Wash and press fabrics. Cut the patches listed in the materials and cutting box and shown in the rotary cutting diagrams. Note that in each block, all B's are cut from the same fabric, all D's are cut from the same fabric, and all E's are cut from the same fabric.

Step 2

Sew 2 B's to both sides of an A to form the center of a block. Press seam allowances toward the B's.

Step 3

Sew 2 C's to both ends of a B. Repeat. Press seam allowances toward the B's. Sew one of these units to the top and the other to the bottom of the block center. Referring to the block piecing diagram, continue building the block outward in this way, first adding patches to the sides, and then adding units with cornerstones (C's) to the top and bottom of the block, and always pressing seam allowances away from the C's. As you build the block, fan seam allowances open at intersections to eliminate bulk. Read the Skill Builder for more information. Make 90 blocks.

Step 4

Join 10 C's alternately with 9 F's as shown in the partial quilt assembly diagram to make a sash row. Make 11 sash rows.

Step 5

Join 10 F's alternately with 9 blocks as shown to make a block row. Make 10 block rows.

Step 6

Matching seams and ends, join sash rows and block rows as shown in the partial quilt assembly diagram.

Step 7

Layer the quilt backing, batting, and top. Quilt 2 concentric squares in the centers of the A's. Outline quilt the outside edges of the B's, D's, and E's. Bind the quilt to finish.
