Imperial Bay

 Assembly

Step 1

Wash and press fabrics. You may wish to lightly starch them to make handling bias easier. Note that if you choose to isolate certain motifs in the large-scale prints for patchwork, you may need more fabric than the amount listed. For more information on using these prints, see the Skill Builder.

Cut the patches listed in the materials and cutting box and shown in the rotary cutting diagrams.

Step 2

Referring to the block piecing diagram, make 12 blocks.

Step 3

Arrange the blocks and F and G patches in diagonal rows as shown in the quilt assembly diagram. Sew the blocks and patches into rows. Join the rows and then add an H patch to each corner.

Step 4

Matching centers, sew a longer gold border to a longer black border to make a side border unit.

Repeat to make a second side border unit. In the same way, join the shorter gold and black borders to make a top and a bottom border unit.

Step 5

Matching centers and starting and stopping 1/4" from each corner, sew the border units to the quilt center. Miter the corners and trim the seam allowances to 1/4"

Step 6

Press the quilt top thoroughly. Lightly mark the Leaf Wreath quilting in the F patches and blocks.

Step 7

Layer and baste together the backing, batting, and quilt top. Quilt the blocks, F, G, and H patches, and borders in-the-ditch. Quilt the marked motifs. Outline quilt the inner border and free-motion quilt leaves in the outer border, or quilt as desired.

Step 8

Bind to finish.
