Yesterday's Roses

 Assembly

Step 1

Wash and press fabrics. Refer to the cutting diagram before cutting white fabric. We recommend cutting the A patches oversize and trimming after applique is completed. Using a photocopy machine, enlarge the applique patterns 200 percent. Make full-size templates and cut applique patches as listed. Read step 7 before cutting oak leaves. Add 3/16" turn-under allowance for turned-edge applique.

Step 2

Refer to the Skill Builder to prepare patches for turned-edge applique using the starch-and-press method. Fold A in half both ways and press folds lightly.

Using the fold lines and full-size patterns as guides, arrange patches as shown. Baste in place. Stitch applique. Make 4 blocks.

Step 3

Dampen completed applique and press face-down on a padded surface. Centering a square rotary ruler over the appliqued wreath, trim blocks to 22 1/2" square.

Step 4

Join blocks to make the center of the quilt.

Step 5

Measure through the center of the quilt from raw edge to raw edge to determine the exact length to cut the side borders. Trim the borders to this measurement. Matching centers and ends, sew to the sides of the quilt.

Step 6

Similarly, measure across the quilt including the side borders to determine the length to cut the top and bottom borders. Following instructions in Step 5, trim borders the correct length and sew to the top and bottom of the quilt.

Step 7

Fold a border in half along the length and press to establish a guide for positioning the oak leaf applique. Repeat for all sides. Referring to the photograph and using the fold lines as a guide, arrange the large oak leaf patches as shown. Note that the stem ends of the leaves line up with the centers of the roses on the blocks, and the tips of the leaves meet in line with the block seams. Use leaf patches cut with the template face down for the left and top borders and leaves cut with the template face up for bottom and right borders. Arrange small oak leaves in the corners as shown. Baste in place.

Step 8

Stitch border applique. Press.

Step 9

Mark feathered wreath quilting motifs in the centers of the appliqued wreaths and in the center of the quilt where the blocks meet.

Referring to the diagram, mark partial wreaths along the edges and in the corners of the central portion. Mark diagonal lines in the background behind the applique and mark straight parallel lines in the borders.

Step 10

Layer the quilt backing, batting, and top. Baste. Terry used white thread to quilt lines on the roses and oak leaves. Quilt around the applique and on marked lines. Bind the quilt to finish.
