Stars Over the Rockies

 Assembly

Step 1

Wash and press fabrics. Cut the patches listed in the materials and cutting box and shown in the rotary cutting diagrams. We suggest that you starch and press the fabric to keep the small patches from stretching.

Step 2

This quilt requires multiple squares made with 2 D's. You may want to use a quick-piecing method for making the half-square triangles or purchase the papers such as Triangles on a Roll or Thangles, for instance. The half-square triangles finish 1 3/4" square.

Referring to the block diagrams, join patches to make 13 blocks, 8 side units, and 4 corner units. The E patches are cut slightly oversize for ease of cutting. Once the blocks are finished, trim the E's even with the edge of the other patches in each block.

Step 3

Referring to the partial quilt assembly diagram, position the blocks, sashes, and setting squares (A's) in diagonal rows. Position the G's around the blocks in the interior and the H's at the outer edges of the quilt. Make diagonal sash and block rows as shown. Trim H's even with the raw edges of the end blocks in each diagonal row. Sew sash rows between block rows. The H's overlap one another along the edges of the quilt.

Center each corner unit on the corner block when sewing the corner unit to the quilt. Trim the outer edges of the quilt, trimming the ends of H's. Use a square acrylic ruler at the corners to ensure that the quilt's corners are square.

Step 4

Matching centers, sew a gold border to each navy border. Sew a border to each side of the quilt, stopping stitching 1/4" from the raw edge of the quilt. Miter the corners.

Step 5

Mark the design of your choice on the wide blue border. Layer the quilt backing, batting, and top. Baste. Quilt in-the-ditch around the block patches, along the sashes, and on the marked lines.

Step 6

There is a folded gold flap inserted at the inside edge of the binding. Fold each gold strip in half lengthwise, wrong sides together. Position a flap on opposite sides of the quilt, raw edges even. Baste to the quilt and trim ends even with the quilt. Repeat on the remaining sides. The flaps overlap at the corners.

Step 7

Position the binding at the edge of the quilt. Stitch the binding, catching the flap in the seam. Add a sleeve and label to the back.
