Daylily Lattice

 Assembly

Step 1

Wash and press fabrics. Cut the patches listed in the materials and cutting box and shown in the rotary cutting diagrams. For accuracy, use full-size templates for A, B, and D patches.

Step 2

Referring to the piecing diagram for block Y, sew a dark brown C to a green E. Press the seam allowance toward the C. Set aside. Sew a dark brown C to an orange C as shown. Press the seam allowance toward the dark brown C. Matching seams, sew the C/E unit to the C/C unit as shown so that the points of the dark brown C's meet. Join a B to the orange C as shown. Repeat to make 4 corner units for block Y. Set these aside.

Step 3

Referring to the piecing diagram for block Y, join 2 tan C's to the sides of a D. Repeat to make 4 side units for block Y.

Step 4

Sew 2 corner units to the opposite sides of an A as shown. Sew 2 side units to a corner unit as shown. Repeat. Finally, assemble block Y according to the diagram. Make 12 block Y.

Step 5

Referring to the piecing diagram for block Z, sew 2 F's to the opposite sides of an E. Then sew 2 G's to the opposite sides of an F. Repeat. Then assemble block Z as shown. Make 6 block Z.

Step 6

Referring to the partial quilt assembly diagram, join the blocks and H's in diagonal rows, and then join the rows to complete the quilt top. Add the I's last. Carefully trim the quilt's raw edges 1/4" away from the points of the Y blocks.

Step 7

Lay the long inner borders down the middle of the quilt and trim the ends even with the quilt's top and bottom edges. Matching centers and ends, sew these to the sides of the quilt, easing if necessary. Press seam allowances away from the quilt. Lay the short inner borders across the middle of the quilt and trim the ends even with the quilt's sides. Matching centers and ends, sew these to the top and bottom of the quilt. In the same way, add the long outer borders to the sides, and then the short outer borders to the top and bottom.

Step 8

Layer the quilt backing, batting, and top. Baste. Quilt in-the-ditch around the block patches and along the inner border. If you used a large-scale print for your border and setting triangles, free-motion quilt around the motifs on the print. Quilt similar motifs in the G's and along the inner border. Bind the quilt to finish.

Note: The continuous-line quilting motifs for the G's and the inner border were "borrowed" from the lilies and leaves in the large-scale print. Find them in our Web Extras area.
