Color Me Blue

 Assembly

Step 1

When choosing fabrics, avoid medium values; strong dark/light contrast makes the most of this graphic pattern. Busy prints add texture and interest. Wash and press fabrics. Cut strips for paper-foundation piecing listed in the materials and cutting box.

Step 2

Download and print the PDF foundation patterns or print the patterns from the image files:

Pineapple Block
Printed size: 6 1/2"x6 1/2", including seam allowances.

Corner Block
Printed size: 4"x4", including seam allowances.

Border Block
Printed size: 6 1/2"x4", including seam allowances.

Make sure the printed patterns are the correct size before making multiple copies. Make 196 foundations for the Pineapple block, 28 foundations for the border block, 28 foundations for the reverse border block, and 4 foundations for the corner blocks.

Step 3

Note that in the Pineapple block, the narrower white strips are used in patches 2, 3, 11, 12, 20, and 21, and the wider cream strips are used in patches 4, 5, 10, 13, 18, and 19. Make Pineapple blocks, border blocks, reverse border blocks, and corner blocks.

Step 4

Referring to the partial quilt assembly diagram for orientation, arrange the blocks on a design wall in 14 rows of 14 blocks each. Place the appropriate border block at the ends of each row. Arrange the border blocks to make a top border; place a corner block on each end. Repeat for the bottom, rotating blocks as shown.

Step 5

Join the blocks into rows. Join the rows. Carefully remove the foundation papers.

Step 6

Layer the quilt backing, batting, and top. Baste. Quilt in-the-ditch around the block patches, or quilt an overall pattern as desired. Bind the quilt to finish.
