Nine-Patch Hourglass

 Assembly

Step 1

Wash and press fabrics. Cut the patches listed in the materials and cutting box and shown in the rotary cutting diagrams.

Step 2

Referring to the block piecing diagrams, make 98 Nine Patches and 97 Hourglass blocks. Julie made each Nine Patch with 2 fabrics; sometimes the dark is in the corners and sometimes on the sides. There are 13 blocks in each row.

Referring to the quilt assembly diagram, alternate the Nine Patches and Hourglass blocks to make the first row, beginning and ending with Nine Patches. Note the orientation of the Hourglass blocks within the row. Make 8 rows like this.

Then, beginning and ending with an Hourglass block as shown in the second row, alternate and join the two kinds of blocks, noting the orientation of these blocks. Make 7 rows like this.

Step 3

Join the 15 rows starting with a Nine Patch row and alternating types.

Step 4

Mark the double-heart pattern on the Nine Patches, and the curved design on the Hourglasses as shown in the block diagrams. Layer the quilt lining, batting, and top. Baste. Quilt on the marked lines.

Step 5

Bind the quilt to finish. Julie has used a slightly wider than usual binding to frame her design.
