Fussy Cutting Stripes

Border 1 is pieced from a printed symmetrical stripe that runs parallel to the selvedges. Note that the stripe in border 1 aligns with the tan stripe B patch in the adjacent block. Mickie Swall carefully fussy cut each tan stripe B, C, E/Er, F/Fr, and G to create this effect.

From see-through template plastic, make an E/Er template, using the rotary diagram for dimensions. Mark the right side of the template with an E to help you determine the correct orientation when cutting patches. On the template, use a rotary ruler to mark the seam allowances on the angled end and on the shorter side. Mark a dot at the intersection of the lines (Fig. 1).

Lay out the quilt center on a large, flat surface. Using the quilt assembly diagram for reference and matching the dot on the template with the C/D seam line of a perimeter block, extend the lines on the fabric in the striped B patch onto the template with a permanent-ink pen (Fig. 2).

From the tan stripe, cut a 3 1/2"-wide strip perpendicular to the selvedges. Align the marked lines on the E template with the printed stripe on the right side of the fabric; trace around the template (Fig. 3). Cut out E. Repeat to cut one more E. Flip the template over, align the marked lines with the stripe on the right side of the fabric, and mark an Er. Cut out the patch. Er patches should be the mirror images of the E patches. Mark and cut out 9 Er patches. Join the appropriate dark fabric B and an E to make the border unit 1’s as shown in the partial quilt assembly diagram. Use the B’s and Er’s to make the border unit 2’s as shown.

Make a template for F using the rotary cutting dimensions. Lay the F template on the right side of a 3 1/2"-wide strip of the tan stripe and mark the stripe on the template. Trace around the template, and then cut out F. Flip the template over, align the marked lines with the printed stripe and trace around the template. Cut out Fr. Join F and Fr with the appropriate B’s to make a border unit 3 and a border unit 4. Also fussy cut 2 G’s so that the position of the stripe is the same for both patches. Likewise, fussy cut the C’s to match stripes on the adjacent corner border unit 2 as shown.

Lay out the quilt center, and arrange the border units as shown in the partial assembly diagram. Check to see that the B patch is the same fabric in the block adjacent to border 1. Join the units to make the side and top and bottom border 1 strips. Starting and stopping 1/4" from each corner and matching seam lines, sew the border 1 strips to the quilt center. Do not miter the corners until step 5.
