Dutch Triangles

 Assembly

Step 1

When choosing fabrics for your version of this vintage scrap quilt, look for stripes, plaids, geometric prints, dots, small- and large-scale florals, and solids. Referring to the quilt photo, note that several of the A's were pieced––some were pieced from 2 similar fabrics and others were pieced from small scraps of the same fabric. To obtain the vintage look, patch together some small scraps to make a few of the A's. Wash and press fabrics. Cut the patches listed in the materials and cutting box and shown in the rotary cutting diagrams.

Step 2

Choose 2 fabrics for each block. Referring to the block piecing diagram, join 8 B's as shown to make a block. Make 97 blocks.

Step 3

On a design wall or flat surface, arrange the A's alternately with the blocks into 15 rows of 13 as shown in the partial quilt assembly diagram. Rearrange as desired to mix up the prints, colors, and values. Note that with very few exceptions, the maker of this quilt oriented her blocks so that the lighter value in each was positioned at the block's top left and bottom right corners.

Step 4

Join the A's and blocks one row at a time. Press the seam allowances of odd-numbered rows in one direction and of even-numbered rows in the opposite direction. Matching seams and ends, join the rows.

Step 5

Layer the quilt top, batting, and backing. Baste. Quilt as desired.
