Hot Ice

Designed and Made by Barbara Baume

The traditional block, North Wind, was the inspiration for this quilt by Barbara Baume of Southington, Connecticut. Barbara used quick methods to make the half-square triangles, and when the scraps were nearly gone, she realized the quilt was too small for what she wanted. As she writes, "To stretch the blocks for a larger quilt, I set them on point on my design wall, leaving spaces for alternate plain squares. I then started to play, rotating the blocks in lots of configurations. The pinwheel effect had more motion and sparkle than the other sets." Barbara thought her quilt looked like beach, sun, and sand, but her husband said it looked wintry with icy crystals, hence the interesting name.
