Feathered Fantasy
Made by Richard Larson

Step 1
Richard chose 9 different fabrics for his quilt, plus cream for the background. You may use that number, or repeat one or more of the fabrics in different rounds. Wash and press fabrics. Cut the patches listed in the materials and cutting box and shown in the rotary cutting diagrams.

Step 2
Make the number of nine-patch blocks listed in the materials box. We suggest that you press these seam allowances open so the blocks will be easier to join later.

Step 3
Referring to the partial quilt assembly diagram, arrange the blocks on a flat surface, starting with the 4 blocks in the center, and working around them with succeeding rows, in bands of color as shown in the quilt assembly diagram.

|
|
Step 4
To keep the diagonal rows in order, place a safety pin in the first block in each row. Pick up one row at a time, keeping the first block on top. Join the blocks for one row; then put it back in place in the quilt layout. Pick up the blocks for the next row, piece them, and so on. Sew the B and C patches to the ends of the rows.

|
|
Step 5
Press the seam allowances in every other row in one direction, and the other rows in the opposite direction. Join the rows.

|
Step 6
Layer the quilt lining, batting, and top. Baste. Quilt in-the-ditch around the block patches. Or if you prefer, quilt random, large feathers across the surface, referring to the quilt photograph for ideas. Richard used a braided metallic thread in the bobbin, and then quilted from the back side in vertical, continuous rows. The thicker bobbin thread shows on the top of the quilt.

Step 7
Bind the quilt to finish.
