 Wide Binding

This technique can be adapted for any width binding. To determine the width to cut binding strips, multiply the finished width of the binding by 4, and add another 1". Add more if your batting is thick.

For 1/2"-wide binding, cut the strips a minimum of 3" wide. After quilting, trim the lining and batting 1/4" from the raw edge of the quilt top. Turn under one short end of the binding strip; fold in half lengthwise, wrong sides together, and press. With raw edges aligned, stitch the binding to the quilt with a 1/4" seam allowance, stopping the stitches 1/4" from the quilt's raw edge (not the edge of the batting/lining). Fold the binding strip away from the quilt at a 45-degree angle; then fold it down again, making the fold even with the batting and lining, not the quilt top's edge. This allows for the extra fullness required to turn the wider binding at the corner.

Align the binding with the raw edge of the quilt again, and stitch in a 1/4" seam as before. Repeat at each corner. Overlap the ends by a few stitches. Turn the binding to the back of the quilt and hand stitch to the lining, covering the line of stitches.
