Quilts in the Classroom

By Jeannie M. Spears

Have you ever thought about how many of the lessons you learned as a child in school are used in making even a simple quilt? Mathematics is the first subject that comes to mind, from geometry and fractions to computing yardage. But going even further, a theme can be developed for a quilt that builds on social studies, geography, history, and other subjects, stimulating creativity and getting children completely immersed in the learning process.

All across the country, talented teachers and volunteers are working with children of all ages in school classrooms to get them involved in quiltmaking. Let us introduce you to a few of them here, and pass on some of the things they've learned about tapping into children's natural creativity.
