Photo Finish
The Nutcracker

By Kathy McNeil

Kathy says, "My quilt celebrates the scenes and characters from The Nutcracker ballet, a universally loved holiday performance." The Marysville, Washington, quilter explains that she drew the figures to scale, constructed each individually, and placed them on her design wall until all seven scenes were finished. She estimates that it took about 800 hours to complete the 67" x 82" piece. The Mouse King and the Nutcracker images were inspired by illustrations by Don Dailey in The Nutcracker by E. T. A. Hoffman. Kathy overdyed commercial cottons to get just the right shade of pink for mouse skin, and applied the whiskers with fabric paint pens.
