Lofty Decisions
Choosing The Right Batting
Part 1, Natural Fibers
Batting Basics
Bearding The migration of batting fibers through the quilt top and backing fabrics.
Bonding One of several processes used on the surface of a batt to help hold the
batting fibers together to prevent bearding.
Drape The way in which a quilt hangs or falls.
Glazing A spray or coat of resin applied to both sides of batting to control
bearding.
Loft The resilience of fibers as well as the thickness of a batt. Most
manufacturers offer several batts made from the same fiber composition but in different
weights or lofts.
Needlepunching A mechanical process of puncturing a batt with a series of barbed
needles, locking in fibers by tangling them together.
Needling How easily a needle passes through fiber during the quilting process.
Scrim A polyester binder that helps to hold the fibers of a batt together,
resulting in a stiffer batt that is generally more difficult to hand quilt.
Thermobonding A process for treating the surfaces of batting with heat to slightly
melt the outermost fibers, thereby locking in fibers and controlling bearding
