Lofty Decisions
Choosing The Right Batting
Part 1, Natural Fibers
In a Class by Itself-Silk
Often limited to use in smaller pieces
such as quilted clothing because of its cost, silk drapes beautifully, although it is a
bit sticky to needle. It provides warmth without weight, and we have heard from
quiltmakers who have used it in quilts for disabled family members who could not tolerate
the weight of regular bedding.
This is the one sample we made differently from the others. The long, fine silk fibers can
migrate through all but the most closely woven fabrics, so we decided to test the batting
with silk on one side and regular-weight cotton fabric on the back.

Silk batting will cling
to and will beard through cotton, as it did to this navy fabric. The silk fibers do not
beard and do not cling to silk fabric, such as the white silk in this photo.
