Yuletide Greetings

 Materials

(for each card)

  • 8 1/2" x 11" card stock; 65# weight or similar
  • Fabric scraps for patchwork
  • Photocopy or tracing of full-size pattern
  • Fusible web (medium or heavy weight)
  • X-Acto(r) knife
  • Metal or rotary ruler and mat

 Assembly

Step 1

Trace or photocopy the pattern.
Note that some blocks are made with several units. Cut the units apart on the bold lines. You can simplify the house block by using one patch in place of the chimney section. For the dove block, you can omit the branch detail if desired, or embroider the branch in front of the dove's beak. Use paper-foundation piecing methods to stitch patches in numerical order to the paper foundations. Piece each unit separately. Trim the fabric 1/4" beyond the paper pattern. Join the units. Remove the paper. Embellish the motif with beads, ribbon, or embroidery, if desired.

Step 2

To make a card, cut an 8 1/2" x 5 1/2" rectangle from the card stock. Fold the card in half. Iron a 4 1/4" x 5 1/2" rectangle of fusible web to the inside front of the card. Mark a line on the inside of the card front (Fig. 1). Cut the card along the drawn line, cutting straight or in a freehand zigzag fashion as seen in some of the cards.

Step 3

Iron a rectangle of fusible web to the back of the pieced block. (Hint: If you have embellished the block with beads, use a pressing cloth underneath.)

Step 4

From the remaining card stock, cut a rectangle that is 4 1/4" x 5 1/2". Remove the paper backing from the pieced block and fuse the block to this rectangle, centering the block on the card stock. Note that the candle makes a vertical card. The other designs make horizontal cards.

Step 5

Remove the paper backing from the inside front of the folded card. Position the fused pieced block in the opening, facing toward the front. Check from the front that the design is placed where you want it. Fuse all in place. Glue an additional piece of white paper inside card, if desired. These cards will fit inside envelopes that are 4 3/8" x 5 3/4".
