Assembly
Step 1
Wash and press fabrics. Cut the patches listed in the materials and cutting box. Each block is a unique combination of batiks. To recreate the look of tessellating pinwheels, place the same fabric in the corners where 4 blocks meet. Before joining the blocks, arrange them on a design wall or a large surface to create the overall pattern. A line drawing is provided to help you plan your own color placement. Enlarge on a copy machine and color with pencils or markers to find a color arrangement that pleases you.

From the assorted batiks, cut the A patches in groups of 4. From the black batik, first cut the binding strips from selvedge to selvedge and then cut the borders and patches from the remaining fabric.
The base of Patch A should measure 4 1/2" when printed.

Step 2
The curved piecing can be done by machine as well as by hand. Referring to the block piecing diagrams and your colored line drawing, make 120 blocks, 44 border blocks, and 4 corner blocks.

Step 3
Referring to the partial quilt assembly diagram, join blocks in 14 rows of 12 blocks each. Sew the rows together and press these seam allowances in one direction.

Step 4
Sew 2 borders to the sides of the quilt and trim the excess length. Add the remaining 2 borders to the top and bottom. Trim again.

|
|
Step 5
Layer the quilt lining, batting, and top. Baste. Quilt in-the-ditch the block patches and borders. Bind the quilt to finish.
