Church in the Wildwoods

Ann tells us that, as children, she and her sister loved the hymn Church in the Wildwood and would sing it for anyone. "Weddings," the Wendell, North Carolina, quilter says, "were our favorite play theme. I envisioned this image during my childhood as I listened to my father's and grandfather's sermons in church."
For the 65" x 71" piece, Ann drafted a straight-line design from an original drawing before she cut each patch individually from hand-dyes, batiks, and commercial cottons. She sewed them together on her 1945 Singer Featherweight. "I make quilts to communicate ideas, express feelings, and tell stories," Ann adds. "I want to unite and enhance diverse fabrics with intricate, precision piecing and exorbitant machine quilting." Photo by Lynn Ruck, courtesy of the artist.
