An anonymous donation of $100,000 has helped further the development of the Wisconsin Quilt and Textile Museum in Cedarburg. The 2.2-acre site will be open temporarily to the public this month for Quilt Day on the Farm during the area's Strawberry Festival, June 28-29, as further fund raising continues toward a goal of $1 million.
The idea for the museum grew out of a state documentation project started in 1988. The Wisconsin Quilt History Project, Inc. was formed, and the group bought the property which has a number of structures. The largest, a bi-level Germanic barn built about 1875, is the first being restored and will serve as the museum. Dairy suites on the lower level of the barn will serve as classrooms and smaller exhibit spaces.
The documentation project photographed and recorded the histories of more than 7,000 quilts in the state, and has published 100 of them in a book entitled Wisconsin Quilts: Stories in the Stitches. The book will be available at the event on the farm, with all proceeds benefitting the museum.
In addition to taking self-guided tours of the farm, visitors can experiment with quilt design at educational tables and can attend slide lectures and talks about some of the quilts discovered in the state.
The farm is located at N50 W5050 Portland Road near Cedarburg's City Park. For more information on the Quilt Day, contact Luella Doss at 262-377-9116; email wiswool@execpc.com. Donations can be sent to the Wisconsin Quilt History Project at P.O. Box 174, Thiensville, WI 53092; 414-964-5131.
