Free Birthday Pattern

QNM's birthday pattern is now available. Designed by Mary Leman Austin to celebrate our 35th birthday, it was inspired by the picture on the cover of QNM #1. To receive your free black-and-white copy, send a long SASE marked "Birthday Pattern" to Birthday Pattern, QNM, 741 Corporate Circle, Suite A, Golden, CO 80401.

Sewing Perfect Kaleido-
scope Blocks

Try pressing units next to a drawn line on your ironing board cover to square them. This technique is especially helpful when sewing blocks that are made with 2 halves where points come together in the center, such as 8-pointed stars. Join the kaleidoscope patches in pairs. Draw a 90-degree angle on your ironing board cover or a piece of muslin pinned to your ironing board. Press the 2-patch unit next to the lines. Ease and block as necessary to achieve a perfect 90-degree corner. Press all block seams open. Join 2 pairs to make half the block. Press this unit alongside a straight line on your ironing board. Finally, join the 2 halves.

How did she do that?

Suzanne Mouton Riggio told us how she made the girl in her Photo Finish quilt, Nineteen Sixty-nine, look like she is holding the first issue of QNM. Suzanne explained, "I printed out the picture of the cover from QNM's website, and I enlarged it on my copier to 8 1/2" x 11". I taped the enlargement to my guild newsletter to approximate the thickness. I placed this construction in my daughter-in-law's hands and photographed her sitting against the tree. When I made the quilt, I scanned the photograph in which the magazine was at the correct angle. I enlarged just that part of the picture to the size I needed and printed it on a sheet of Printed Treasures. Then it was appliqued as usual."
