Houston Show Continues Tradition

East Meets West, by Harriet D. Rudoff.

Thousands of quilts, vendors, and quilt lovers once again filled the aisles of the George R. Brown Convention Center in Houston, Texas, for the 28th Fall International Quilt Festival, beginning with the preview events on October 30.

This year's show featured another collection of September 11th- inspired quilts. Unlike the exhibit of quilts at the 2001 show, created immediately following the plane crashes, this year's followup, The Day the World Changed, was a juried exhibit of works completed in the months following the attacks.

Star Spangles, 45" x 74", by Donna Hussain of Sacramento, California, one of the finalist quilts shown in QNM's Reflections of Heritage exhibit.

Visitors were treated to a number of other special exhibits, including Kaleidoscopes and Quilts featuring Paula Nadelstern's complex quilts paired with actual kaleidoscopes created by artisans from around the country. The Bernina® Fashion Show once again featured original garments created with a full range of embellishment techniques, such as East Meets West (left), by Harriet D. Rudoff of Miami, Florida. A new exhibit, In the American Tradition, celebrated quiltmakers of today who continue to make traditional quilts. The IQA has announced that this exhibit has been scheduled to be one of its annual showcases.

Liebe-Hass-Hasslieben-geliebter Hass, 47" x 47", by Cécile Trentini of Zurich, Switzerland, from Hands All Around.

Quilter's Newsletter Magazine sponsored two exhibits. For the 18th year, Hands All Around, an exhibition of international quilts, displayed works from artists in Finland, France, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Germany, Canada, Australia, and Japan, as well as the United States. Reflections of Heritage featured finalist quilts from the magazine's eighth international contest.

Shirley Kelly's Flowers of the Crown won the $10,000 That Patchwork Place® best of show award in the annual judged show Quilts: A World of Beauty.

Honfleur Du Coté De Lieutenance, 43" x 48", by Georgette Meyer of Paris, France, from Hands All Around.
