Houston Readies for Festival Week

Lightning By Day, from the exhibit Hanging by a Thread, quilts by Priscilla Bianchi of Guatemala.

Preview night is scheduled for October 29, but the doors will open officially on the 29th International Quilt Festival/Houston on October 30, with events and exhibitions continuing through November 2. Classes begin on Monday, October 27.

Quilts entered in the annual judged exhibition Quilts: A World of Beauty will compete for $70,250 in cash, including a $10,000 That Patchwork Place best of show award. Some of the other large exhibits include Spirit and Strength, quilts made to reflect what the artists see as their guiding spirits and strongest attributes; In the American Tradition II, a juried exhibit honoring traditional quiltmaking; and Baltimore Album Review, featuring the detailed applique and hand quilting associated with the style. American & Efird, Inc., eQuilter.com, FreeSpirit® Fabrics, and QNM will sponsor a selection of quilts from the 2001 international juried exhibition of innovative contemporary quilts, Quilt National. And once again, wearable art will be the focus of the Bernina Fashion Show, this year entitled Fantasy.

Visitors will find the show layout changed somewhat this year with the exhibits grouped together on the show floor. Guatemalan quiltmaker Priscilla Bianchi will have some of her quilts on display in the exhibit Hanging by a Thread, and the international nature of the festival will be further emphasized with the display Ralli: Traditional Quilts from Pakistan and India. Tactile Architecture 2003 will feature works based on architectural themes by international artists.

For more information on the show, see the website www.quilts.com, email shows@quilts.com, or contact Quilts, Inc., 7660 Woodway, Suite 550, Houston, TX 77063; 713-781-6864.

At right, Small works, only 8 1/2" x 11", are featured in the Houston exhibit A Page from My Book: Journal Quilts 2003, including Corazon by Leslie Tucker Jenison, and February by Kathy York. Slightly larger works, 18" square, are presented in Professional Art Quilt Alliance: Small Works II, such as Two Daughters I by Sidney Jostes and Two Tubers by Laura Wasilowski.
