News Notes

...African American quilts displayed in Wisconsin...

The national tour of some recently acclaimed quilts from the small, isolated community of Gee's Bend, Alabama, will be on display through January 4, 2004, at the Milwaukee Art Museum. The exhibition includes 70 of the quilts from the collection of Tinwood Alliance, a nonprofit foundation founded by William Arnett for the support of African American vernacular art. Arnett's company, Tinwood Books, has published images of the quilts and the stories behind them in two volumes, The Quilts of Gee's Bend and Gee's Bend: The Women and Their Quilts. The museum is located at 700 N. Art Museum Dr., Milwaukee, WI 53202. For more information on the exhibit, phone 414-224-3200 or see www.mam.org.

...Utah show and auction benefits charities...

Since it began in 1983, more than $1 million has been raised for medical education, research, and improvement of patient care at the LDS Hospital in Salt Lake City by the now biennial Deseret Foundation's Holiday Quilt Show and Auction. More than 70 quilts made by more than 1,000 quilters will be on display at the Little America Hotel from October 31 through November 6 with the auction taking place on November 7. To date, the record auction price for a single quilt is $25,000. For more information on either the show or auction, contact The Deseret Foundation, 8th Ave. & C St., Salt Lake City, UT 84143; 801-408-1775; website www.deseretfoundation.com.
