Once more the Tokyo Dome is preparing for more than 250,000 visitors expected for the Tokyo International Great Quilt Festival 2004 from January 23-31.
As the world's largest quilt show, the festival receives entries from around the world for the competitive portion of the show, the Japan Quilt Grand Prix. This year's jurors, including Jacqueline M. Atkins, Keiko Goke, Hiroshi Kashiwagi, Shizuko Kuroha, Fumie Ono, and Reiko Washizawa, completed the selective judging process nearly two months before the show.

QNM's executive director, Mary Leman Austin, served as one of the judges for the 2003 competition and observed that the show attracts the work of some extremely fine quiltmakers. Quilts from that show appeared in two QNM Readers' Quilt Show articles in June (No. 353) and November (No. 357).

The Tokyo International Great Quilt Festival has special entry divisions. In 2003, Chan Chih Cheng of China took top honors in the popular bag quilt category for When I was 18 Years Old II.

Some of the other exhibits at this year's festival will include eighteenth- and nineteenth-century quilts from Provence, France; eighteenth- and nineteenth-century quilts from the collection of the New York State Historical Association; works by 25 contemporary Japanese quilt artists; and a tribute to Sunbonnet Sue with antique and contemporary representations of the classic figure. In addition, quiltmakers have been invited to submit quilts for a gallery where the display is changed daily.
