When Ohio celebrated its bicentennial in 2003, quiltmakers there wanted to be sure they were represented in the festivities. In August of 2003, visitors to the Ohio Bicentennial Quilt Showcase in Columbus were treated to a display of 1,255 quilts. Every county in the state was represented.

Included in the show were more than 250 quilts entered in the Ohio Bicentennial Challenge. Betty Patty of Bradford won best of show for her depiction of one of the state's pioneers of the early 1800s. Her quilt honored John Johnston, the man who established the Johnston Homestead in Piqua, Ohio, land where American Indian and western cultures came together peacefully for a time. After the exhibition, the quilt was donated to the permanent collection of the Ohio Historical Society.
