For her business abilities, service to the quilting industry, teaching, design of patterns and templates, and authorship of many books, Marti Michell of Chamblee, Georgia, has been named the eleventh recipient of the Silver Star Award to be presented at the International Quilt Festival/Houston in November.
The award is presented each year to a person whose work has positively influenced, promoted, and developed the art of quilting.
"This is an incredible honor," says Marti, owner with her husband of From Marti Michell, her business that sells her books, templates, rulers, patterns, and accessories. "I will be thrilled to have my name added to the list of recipients who have displayed so many outstanding talents."
Karey Bresenhan, president of Quilts, Inc. and director of the International Quilt Festival, will present Marti's award at a dinner on November 6 in Houston. "Marti has inspired countless quilters to stretch their wings and try new things. She doesn't follow anyone; instead, she's been a leader."
QNM founder Bonnie Leman was the first honoree in 1994. She's been followed by Jinny Beyer, Virginia Avery, Jean Ray Laury, Yvonne Porcella, Donna Wilder, Roberta Horton, Georgia Bonesteel, Nancy J. Martin, and Elly Sienkiewicz.
