When residents of this Vermont college town start to see pieced vests and other quilted apparel, they know it's time for another Vermont Quilt Festival. This year, for the 28th annual show, visitors from around the world will once again take over the campus of Norwich University in Northfield from July 9-11.
In addition to workshops and lectures from more than 25 teachers, collectors, designers, and quilt book authors, the festival will again offer a wide variety of exhibits including True Blue, featuring a collection of blue and white quilts assembled over the past 30 years by Merry and Al Silber. Their daughter, Julie Silber--an internationally recognized curator and author--will lecture on the history of the indigo plant and the indigo dyed fabrics used in some of the quilts in the exhibit.
Another featured selection of quilts, entitled Mavericks, includes works of quiltmakers who extended traditional design patterns into original, often displaying a sense of fun and play.
For those who enjoy a hands-on experience, the ABC Quilts Booth in the Plumley Armory offers visitors a chance to help create small quilts for at-risk children.
