& News in Quilting Around the World

Washington Community
Celebrates

Cramped Quarters, 27" x 45", by Sidnee Snell of Corvallis, Oregon.

When the Gaches Mansion reopened its doors in 1997 as a quilt museum in the small waterfront town of La Conner, few knew what to expect, but hopes were high. This month the La Conner Quilt Museum, the only quilt museum in the Pacific Northwest, celebrates its seventh anniversary with a variety of activities throughout the community.

During the September 24-26 celebration, the museum will exhibit two collections: Connecting Times from Japan, curated by Miwako Kimura, and Perceptions of Reality by Three Uppity Women (Debra Calkins, Anne Davenport, and Larkin Van Horn). Nearby Maple Hall will include a quilt show by Tactile Expressions, a collective of 20 contemporary art quilters, with selections from two of its traveling exhibits, ArchiTexture and Beyond Boundaries.

In addition, the Block Party Quilters of Sammamish, Washington, will hold a quilt walk in the town's shops, and four two-day workshops will be held with quilt teachers Laura Cater-Woods, Rose Hughes, Rita Hutchens, and Judith Shapiro.
