Gifts of Love
on Display in Paducah

Gifts of Love, 33" x 39", by Kathy McNeil of Marysville, Washington, raised more than $16,000 for the medical expenses of a young girl with leukemia. The enlargement shown below highlights the sleigh and reindeer from the bottom portion of the quilt, showing the level of detail Kathy included in the wall hanging. The quilt is now owned by Cora Lawson.

You might remember Kathy McNeil's quilt Christmas in the Forest from the cover of QNM in December 2002 (No. 348). Or perhaps you lingered over The Nutcracker, another of her seasonal quilts, shown as the Photo Finish in the December 2003 issue (No. 358). Through January 8, 2005, these and other detailed quilts by this Marysville, Washington, quiltmaker will be on display at the Museum of the American Quilter's Society.

Another of Kathy's holiday-themed quilts, though not her largest, is sure to attract attention in this show. Kathy spent 310 hours creating Gifts of Love, a quilt that was used to raise funds for a bone marrow transplant for a friend's daughter diagnosed with leukemia.

Kathy says she quilts as therapy but laughs when she says she doesn't know if it's any cheaper. She continues to be buoyed, however, by the attention and generosity her quilts have attracted. She adds that she is particularly proud that this quilt has helped raise awareness for the importance of people adding their names to the national registry as a bone marrow donor.
