For the eighth time, Quilter's Newsletter Magazine was honored to be invited to present the award for Excellence in Quiltmaking at International Quilt Week Yokohama 2004 in November.
Quiet Time, 67" x 72", was the winner, a contemporary study in blues by Reiko Hatakeyama of Sendai, Miyagi, Japan. Reiko's quilt was one of more than 1,100 entries to the festival that featured such diverse exhibits as quilts from Hawaii and Spain, art quilts from South Africa, and Pink Ribbon quilts, made to raise breast cancer awareness. Other exhibits featured entries in the various contest categories including traditional and contemporary works, pictorial or memory quilts, message quilts, flower quilts, quilts with a Japanese theme, and handbags and wearables.
