In Ontario, in the heart of Canada's Mennonite community, plans are nearly finished for the tenth Waterloo County & Area Quilt Festival, scheduled for May 19-29. The festival includes quilt-related events in ten different communities.
The sites will offer workshops, an auction, and exhibits such as quilts from Australia, a juried show from the Canadian Quilters' Association, and feed sack quilts. The World Piece Exhibit will feature the Invitation Project's Quilt of Belonging, a national textile art project that portrays Canada's ethnically diverse population. The 10-foot-high, 120-foot-long quilt was started in 1998 by visual artist Esther Bryan, and includes 265 separate nine-inch textile art pieces from every aboriginal group and immigrant nationality found in the country. More information about the project is available on the website www.invitationproject.ca.
Proceeds from the nonprofit festival are used for community projects. Maps to the events and more information are available on the website www.waterlooquiltfestival.com or contact the festival at P.O. Box 626, St. Jacobs, Ontario N0B 2N0; 519-664-2728; fax 519-664-3026.
