Summer Calendar Filled
with Outdoor Shows

Put on sunscreen and sunglasses and pull out the map. This summer you can spend a day admiring the handiwork of other quiltmakers in one or more of a growing number of outdoor shows.

The grandmother of these shows has to be the Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show in Sisters, Oregon. On July 9, many of the locals will rise before dawn to help celebrate the show's thirtieth anniversary by hanging more than 1,100 quilts, completely transforming the small town into a colorful kaleidoscope of color for thousands of visitors. For more information, see the website www.stitchinpost.com/soqs.html or contact the Stitchin' Post, P.O. Box 280, Sisters, OR 97759; 541-549-6061; stitchin@stitchinpost.com.

Volunteers will hang quilts all over Montana's historic village of Eureka in August.

Another part of Oregon, Benton County, advertises itself as Quilt Country in September with more than 25 different quilt shows, quilt walks in Corvallis and Philomath, and a special feature, "Quilts in Corvallis Gardens." For details, call the Benton County Museum at 541-929-6230 or contact Corvallis Tourism at 541-757-1544 or 800-334-8118.

Head north, east, or south of Oregon, and you can soak up the sun at other shows. From September 23-25, you'll find the sixth outdoor quilt walk in the historic downtown area of Walla Walla, Washington, just part of the larger quilt festival that continues from September 19-25. Phone 541-938-6130; website www.wallawallaquiltfestival.org.

In Montana, you'll find the Eureka Outdoor Show, August 4-6. In addition to the displays of quilts throughout the town, classes will be available from Linda Jenkins of Piece O' Cake Designs and Harriet Hargrave. For more information, contact EMQS, P.O. Box 1688, Eureka, MT, 59917; EMQS@eurekaquiltshow.Com; www.eurekaquiltshow.com.

Quilts of all colors will dominate the landscape for one day on September 11 at the Hill City Outdoor Show in South Dakota.

South Dakota offers the Hill City Outdoor Show in its downtown area on September 11. The colorful quilts hanging outside homes and businesses will contrast sharply with the bright blue skies overhead. Visitors will also want to step inside the Warrior's Work Studio Gallery to take in the Native American Quilt Show on September 10-11. For details, contact Jan Humphrey at 605-574-2166; email plazykranch@earthlink.net.

The community of Reedley, California, is so fond of quilts it has replaced portions of its sidewalks with tile quilt block designs.

Travelers to California will find outdoor shows in many parts of the state. On August 13, you'll find colorful quilts hanging along the length of Fourth Street for the eleventh Great Petaluma Quilt Show. Contact GPQS at 421 Second St., Petaluma, CA 94952; 707-775-3661.

In Fremont, California, the Spanish architecture along Mission Boulevard, the main street of the historic Mission San Jose district, will be decorated with quilts on August 27. Visit the website www.msjoutdoorquiltshow.com for details. And on September 23-24, quilt lovers can take a different kind of quilt walk through the downtown area of Reedley, California, before or after they visit the Kings River Quilt Festival at the Reedley Community Center. The community is so taken with quilting that large quilt designs in ceramic tile have been permanently embedded in the sidewalks. For information contact Pat Robertson, 1417 N. Birch Ave., Reedley, CA 93654; 559-638-8624.

These are just some of the outdoor shows you'll find this year. For other exhibits, see the Calendar.
